Knock-Knock, Guess Who? It’s the Flu!

Knock-Knock, Guess Who? It’s the Flu!

Flu season has reemerged, and we want to make sure you won’t forget about it. Influenza is making waves in the U.S. – and not in a good way. The 2024-2025 flu season has become the most severe in over 15 years. This is more than an unwelcome guest—it’s a wake-up call.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 24 million illnesses and 310,000 hospitalizations occur each year. The numbers alone are staggering and demand our attention. So, why does it seem so angry at us? A few key factors may be contributing.

Dominant Strains
This season has seen a resurgence of the H3N2 and Influenza B strains. Historically, these strains cause more severe symptoms, particularly in older adults and young children, making it vital to stay on guard.

Early Onset and Rapid Spread
Flu activity began earlier than usual, leading to widespread transmission across 43 states and significantly impacting the South, Southwest, and Western regions. This early surge overwhelmed healthcare facilities and resulted in numerous school closures due to high illness rates. When the flu arrives early, it doesn’t just knock – it kicks the door wide open.

Reduced Immunity
Do you remember the heightened precautions taken during the COVID-19 pandemic? Masks, social distancing, and limited gatherings helped slow the spread of various viruses, including the flu. While those efforts protected us at the time, they also resulted in reduced overall exposure to flu strains. With less exposure, our collective immunity has decreased, leaving more individuals susceptible to contracting and spreading the virus.

Healthcare System Strain

This year’s flu isn’t just competing for attention—it’s sharing the spotlight with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19. The overlapping circulation of these viruses has compounded the burden on healthcare systems, leading to increased hospitalizations and strained resources.

Flu Prevention Is in Your Hands

Thanks to the infamous COVID-19 pandemic, we all know how to prevent the spread of viral infection: Wash your hands frequently, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and stay home if you feel unwell. As the season progresses, continued vigilance and adherence to public health recommendations are essential to navigating this particularly challenging flu season.

Your efforts safeguard you and ensure your family, friends, and community stay safe and healthy. Beat the flu before it beats you!

Our team will be in touch as soon as possible to discuss your needs.
